Lombok Indonesia Resorts Lombok calls itself the "other Bali" and is just east of Indonesia's most famous tourist island, separated by the 250 meter-deep Lombok strait, one of the rare places where the world's largest cargo ships and tankers can pass through. Perhaps the deep channel also keeps the revived Bali tourist horde at bay for now, until the new international airport opens in 2010.

Of the twin islands, Lombok has better beaches and a more massive volcano, yet sees less people for now even with its increased visibility, keeping it a fresh destination awaiting the unspoilt tourist.

Mount Rinjani, a restive volcano, is the solitary giant on Lombok's landscape. Rice fields cover the lower half of the island, supporting a mostly agricultural population of three million people.

The native Lombok people call themselves the Sasaks, and before the 17th century their island was under the rule of many little states - disunited until the Dutch sided with them in defeating the Balinese nobles' authority.

Lombok has a tropical climate, and temperatures range from 28 to 34 degrees Celcius all year. There is a distinct wet and dry season. The dry season lasts from May until September, while rains fall generally between October and April.
